Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - West Salem, IL.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near West Salem that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is encouraged.
