There are recovery programs offered in or near Keystone that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and it is recommended and encouraged.
