If a person is receiving outpatient detoxification they must go to the facility assisting them with their detox every day or at minimum five days per week in most situations. Outpatient detoxification services are either delivered in the evening or daytime, which makes it ideal for a person who needs to keep a normal school or work routine. Some programs also provide ways to get detox treatment in a choice of regular outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detoxification services and help prevent a relapse.
A standard time individuals participate in outpatient detox is approximately 7 days. Some programs use medication assisted detox approaches while others offer medication free detox treatement. At times when meds are needed to avert life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, like with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are sometimes an issue. Alternatively, staff at the program help clients manage their physical, emotional and psychological symptoms of cravings and withdrawal until they are safely detoxified and stabilized.
While outpatient detox in Avery Island is more flexible for apparent reasons, a severe disadvantage is that individuals are at a greater chance of relapse due to the access they keep to alcohol and drugs. Ideally, clients will transition into a log-term or short-term recovery facility to address the causes of their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detox is finished.
