If an individual is getting outpatient detoxification they travel to the center helping them with their detoxification every day or at minimum five days per week in most cases. Outpatient detoxification is either delivered in the daytime or evening, which makes it perfect for a person who needs to maintain a normal school or work schedule. Some programs also provide options to receive detoxification treatment in a choice of normal outpatient or outpatient day treatment, to augment detox services and prevent relapse.
An average time individuals participate in outpatient detox is approximately a week. A number of programs use medically assisted detoxification methods while others offer medication free detox treatement. At times when meds are needed to prevent life threatening withdrawal problems, as is the case with alcohol and benzodiazepine medications where seizures are at times a problem. Otherwise, staff at the program help people manage their emotional, psychological, and physical symptoms of cravings and withdrawal until they are safely detoxed and stabilized.
While outpatient detox in Gray is more flexible for obvious reasons, a very severe disadvantage is that people are at a greater chance of falling back into addiction due to the access they maintain to drugs. Ideally, clients will transition into a log-term or short-term recovery program to deal with the causes of their addiction once outpatient or inpatient detoxification is complete.
