It is estimated that approximately 75% of clients at residential rehabilitation programs for drug addiction and alcoholism are smokers. While it is true that nicotine is addicting and clients in rehab for addiction should endeavor to be free from all addictive substances, this can introduce problems that make enforcing a non-smoking facility outweigh the advantages of such restrictions. Someone who is addicted to a substance as life threatening as drugs and alcohol might not agree to get help if they must quit smoking cigarettes, so therefore, many programs in Sun allow smoking with certain restrictions, limitations and in designated areas.
Some facilities permit clients to smoke anywhere, provides it is outdoors for instance. Some rehab centers have a designated smoking area, and this is the only place that clients can smoke. Because nicotine is addictive, even rehab facilities that allow smoking typically offer alternatives to smoking if the client would like to consider this as an option, such as nicotine replacement gum, patches and prescriptions. There are also rehab centers that permit smoking in designated areas, but educate clients on the health risks associated with smoking by including this into their program either by way of direct one on one counseling or by providing educational literature for clients to examine. In programs which allow smoking in designated areas this is sometimes only approved for clients, whereas staff are sometimes banned from smoking at the facility or are asked to not smoke in front of clients.
Publicly funded substance abuse rehabilitation facilities are bound by the rules and restrictions in regards to smoking that are imposed by state and federal agencies which oversee and administer these programs. Private rehab facilities have a bit more tolerance and don't have as many rules imposed on them, so may be more likely to provide designated areas for smoking.
