Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Winthrop, MA.

There are addiction programs offered in or near Winthrop that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
