Treatment Services for the Hearing Impaired - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - DHS, MD.

Drug treatment services for the hearing impaired are offered in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. People with hearing impairment may be at a higher risk of substance abuse problems due to their impairment. living with a significant impairment can be a source of distress, discouragement, depression, unhappiness and apathy for both adolescents and adults who could easily turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with these emotions. Hearing impaired services are accessible in DHS to help resolve addiction for these clients, with ASL and other assistance which includes recovery and treatment information and education in writing so that patients aren't prevented from receiving help as a result of their impairment.

Addiction rehabilitation programs that have full time staff to assist the hearing impaired are the most appropriate programs to consider. Some programs only employ part-time staff to interpret and assist this demographic, which this means hearing impaired clients may not make as much progress as everyone else and will miss out on important activities they should be participating in daily. There may be video presentations available which use sign language as well, which is also quite helpful.

There are organizations and agencies which provide hearing impaired people suffering with addiction with information and resources to discover and locate the recovery services they need. One of these is the Deaf Off Drugs and Alcohol (DODA).
