Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Mc Henry, MD.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Mc Henry that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
