Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Williamsport, MD.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Williamsport that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
