Regular out-patient rehab is mostly a less costly alternative to more comprehensive outpatient centers or inpatient rehabilitation, and is the lowest intensity of formal substance abuse rehabilitation available in Denmark. Some clients are in rehab for the first time and have chosen regular outpatient because that is all they can afford and time commitment and scheduling because of work, school or other obligations. Regular out-patient rehabilitation services usually have group and individual counseling services occurring once maybe twice per week. Programs that include a wider spectrum of services may include counseling (behavioral therapy) to assist with relapse prevention and dual-diagnosis services to help address co-occurring addiction and mental health issues. The length of time a person remains involved in recovery can change from client to client, and a person's progress can be judged every now and then and more treatment can be recommended contingent upon these conclusions.

In some cases, a regular outpatient treatment facility may be lacking in intensity for an individual who is dealing with a bad drug and alcohol problem and has not gone to treatment previously or has relapsed after prior outpatient rehab.
