Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Liberty, ME.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Liberty which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
