Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Machiasport, ME.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Machiasport which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
