There are substance abuse programs available in or near Alba which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
