Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Arcadia, MI.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Arcadia which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
