Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Atlantic Mine, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Atlantic Mine that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
