There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Bradley which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
