Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Buchanan, MI.

There are programs offered in or near Buchanan which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
