Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Burr Oak, MI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Burr Oak that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
