Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Carleton, MI.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Carleton that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
