Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Center Line, MI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Center Line which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
