There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Central Lake that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
