There are programs available in or near Charlotte which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
