Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Chatham, MI.

There are recovery programs offered in or near Chatham that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
