Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Clifford, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Clifford that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
