Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Clinton Township, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Clinton Township that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
