Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will instead not engage in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use.
