Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - De Tour Village, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in De Tour Village which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
