There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Dearborn that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
