There are programs offered in or near Detroit that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
