There are programs available in or near East Grand Rapids that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will instead no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
