Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Gaastra, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Gaastra which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
