There are programs offered in or near Grand Junction which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is encouraged.
