Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Gulliver, MI.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Gulliver that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
