Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Highland, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Highland that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
