Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Ida, MI.

There are programs available in or near Ida that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and this is encouraged.
