Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time causing them to feel high. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
