Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Kearsarge, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Kearsarge which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
