There are addiction programs offered in or near Lathrup Village which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
