Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Mackinac Island, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Mackinac Island that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
