There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Madison Heights which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to treat the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and this is encouraged.
