Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Mattawan, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mattawan that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
