There are substance abuse programs available in or near Monroe which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to handle the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
