Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Mount Clemens, MI.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Mount Clemens which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
