Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Nazareth, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Nazareth that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
