Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - New Buffalo, MI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in New Buffalo that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
