Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Oscoda, MI.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Oscoda which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
