Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Oshtemo, MI.

There are addiction programs available in or near Oshtemo which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
