Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Parma, MI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Parma that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
