There are programs offered in or near Reese which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as secondary treatment, and it is encouraged.
