Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Skandia, MI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Skandia which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
